Cleaning & Hygiene
Tooth decay is a progressive disease resulting from the interaction of bacteria that naturally occurs on the teeth and sugars we consume in the everyday diet. Sugars are consumed by bacteria, causing the production of acids that break down the minerals in the teeth, forming a cavity. Dentists remove the decay and fill the tooth using a variety of fillings, restoring the tooth to a healthy state. Nerve damage can result from severe decay and may require a root canal treatment and a porcelain crown. Avoiding unnecessary decay simply requires adherence to a good dental hygiene regimen: brushing teeth and flossing twice a day, regular dental check-ups, a healthy diet and fluoride treatment. Practicing good oral hygiene avoids unhealthy teeth and costly treatments!
To prevent gum disease, practice good daily oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Additionally, see your dentist regularly for checkups and professional cleanings, quit smoking, eat a balanced diet, and address other risk factors like teeth grinding, and certain medications.
